Granular Hydrodynamics and Pattern Formation in Vertically Oscillated Granular Disks Layers

چکیده
A numerical hydrodynamic model of a vibrated granular bed in 2D is elaborated based on a highly accurate Shock Capturing scheme applied to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for granular flow. The hydrodynamic simulation of granular flows is numerically difficult, particularly in systems where dilute and dense regions occur at the same time and interact with each other. As an example of such a problematic system we investigate the formation of Faraday waves in a 2d system which is exposed to vertical vibration in the presence of gravity. The results of the CHD agree quantitatively well with eventdriven Molecular Dynamics.

Continuum-Type Stability Balloon in Oscillated Granular Layers
The stability of convection rolls in a fluid heated from below is limited by secondary instabilities, including the skew-varicose and crossroll instabilities. We observe a stability boundary defined by these same instabilities in stripe patterns in a vertically oscillated granular layer. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the mechanism of the skew-varicose instability in granular patterns...
متن کاملRole of friction in pattern formation in oscillated granular layers.
Particles in granular flows are often modeled as frictionless (smooth) inelastic spheres; however, there exist no frictionless grains, just as there are no elastic grains. Our molecular dynamics simulations reveal that friction is essential for realistic modeling of vertically oscillated granular layers: simulations of frictionless particles yield patterns with an onset at a container accelerat...
متن کاملSquare to stripe transition and superlattice patterns in vertically oscillated granular layers.
We investigated the physical mechanism for the pattern transition from square lattice to stripes, which appears in vertically oscillating granular layers. We present a continuum model to show that the transition depends on the competition between inertial force and local saturation of transport. By introducing multiple free-flight times, this model further enables us to analyze the formation of...
متن کاملSquare to Stripe transition in vertically oscillated Granular Layers
Based on the mass and momentum conservation law, we present a simple continuum model to explain the transition between squares and stripes in vertically oscillated granular layers. The study shows that the transition depends on a competition between the lateral movement and the local saturation. The large lateral transfer leads to square formation via the triad interaction, but the local satura...
متن کاملSpiral patterns in oscillated granular layers.
Cell-filling spiral patterns are observed in a vertically oscillated layer of granular material when the oscillation amplitude is suddenly increased from below the onset of pattern formation into the region where stripe patterns appear for quasistatic increases in amplitude. These spirals are transients and decay to stripe patterns with defects. A transient spiral defect chaos state is also obs...
